Installing Residential and Kitchen Faucets

Are you planning to replace your kitchen or bathroom faucet and looking for a simple, reliable guide? The good news is that with a few basic tools and by following a precise guide, you can do it like a professional and save on costs.

In this comprehensive article from Duvan, we provide step-by-step visual instructions for installing modern single-lever faucets, including standard and pull-out (shower hose) models. No need to worry—follow along and confidently bring both beauty and functionality to your kitchen and bathroom.

Before You Start: Required Tools and Parts

Preparing the right tools is half the battle. Before you begin, make sure you have the following:

Tools Needed:

  • Adjustable wrench (or pipe wrench)
  • Open-end wrench (usually size 10 or 13)
  • Teflon tape
  • A bucket and a few cloths (to catch any remaining water in the pipes)
  • Flashlight or headlamp (for better visibility under the sink)

Main Parts:

  • New faucet
  • Two stop valves (one for cold water and one for hot water)
  • Supply hoses (usually included in the faucet packaging)

Duvan Tip: Fortunately, all standard Duvan faucets come with supply hoses, washers, and mounting hardware included in the package, so you won’t need to worry about sourcing additional parts.

Section 1: Installing a Kitchen Single-Lever Faucet (Standard Type)

This guide applies to the installation of most standard single-lever faucets.

Step 1: Turn Off Water and Prepare the Pipes

  • Shut off the main valve: The first and most important step is to close the main water supply to the unit.
  • Drain remaining water: Open the old faucet to let any remaining water in the pipes drain completely. Place a bucket under the cold and hot water pipes beneath the sink.
  • Disconnect old connections: Using an adjustable wrench, loosen and remove the nuts on the old supply hoses from the cold and hot water pipes.
  • Install stop valves: Wrap Teflon tape around the threads of the cold and hot water pipes. Then connect the blue stop valve to the cold water pipe and the red stop valve to the hot water pipe, tightening them securely.

Step 2: Prepare the New Faucet for Installation

  • Attach hoses to the faucet: The supply hoses have two ends: a threaded end and a nut end. Connect the threaded ends to the inlets under the new faucet. Since these hoses have built-in O-rings, Teflon tape is not needed.
  • Install the main bolt: Screw the long main bolt (double-threaded) into the designated spot under the faucet. Teflon tape is not required for this bolt.

Step 3: Position and Secure the Faucet on the Sink

  • Place the washer: Slide the main ring washer around the hoses and bolt, positioning it precisely under the faucet.
  • Thread the hoses through the sink: Carefully pass the hoses and main bolt through the sink hole and set the faucet in place.
  • Secure from underneath: From below the sink, first place the plastic mounting bracket (usually triangular) and then the metal bracket over the main bolt. Thread the nut onto the bolt and tighten it by hand as much as possible.
  • Final alignment: Adjust the faucet angle from above to ensure it is perfectly straight and centered.
  • Tighten completely: Once the faucet is aligned, use an appropriate wrench to fully tighten the nut from beneath the sink so that the faucet is stable and does not wobble.

Step 4: Final Connections and Leak Test

  • Connect hoses to the supply valves: Attach the nut end of the left hose to the hot water supply valve and the right hose to the cold water supply valve. Tighten with a wrench.
  • Turn on water: Slowly open the supply valves and then the main water valve.
  • Check for leaks: Inspect all connections (under the faucet and at the supply valves) carefully to ensure there are no leaks.

Part 2: Installing Pull-Out (Shower) Faucets

The installation process is very similar to a standard faucet, with a few key differences:

  • Follow Steps 1 and 2: Install the supply valves and connect the hot and cold hoses and main bolt under the new faucet.
  • Mount the faucet on the sink: Place and secure the faucet as before.
  • Connect the main pull-out hose: Guide the long pull-out hose from the faucet spout downward into the cabinet.
  • Install the weight: Attach the counterweight at the lower section of the pull-out hose (usually marked). This helps the hose return smoothly to its place.
  • Final connection: Connect the end of the pull-out hose to its designated outlet under the faucet body (usually a push-fit or click connection).
  • Test and check: Turn on the water, check for leaks, and test the pull-out hose’s operation and return.

Part 3: Troubleshooting Common Installation Issues (and Simple Solutions)

Even when following instructions precisely, issues may occur. Here are solutions to common problems:

Problem 1: Water leaking from connections

  • Identify the exact source: Is the leak from the hose connection to the supply valve or under the faucet body?
  • Retighten connections: Turn off water, then tighten nuts slightly with a wrench. Avoid overtightening to prevent damaging washers.
  • Check Teflon tape: If leaking at the valve connection, remove and apply 10–15 wraps of Teflon tape and reconnect.

Problem 2: Low water pressure after installation

  • Check supply valves: Ensure valves are fully open.
  • Clean the aerator (perlator): Debris from installation may block the aerator. Remove, rinse with water, clean with a toothbrush, and reinstall.
  • Inspect hoses: Ensure hoses are not kinked or bent.

Problem 3: Faucet wobbles on the sink

  • Tighten the mounting nut underneath the sink fully. Have someone hold the faucet straight from above while tightening.

Problem 4: Pull-out faucet head doesn’t return properly

  • Adjust the weight: Slide the counterweight slightly lower on the hose to provide more pull-down force.
  • Free the hose path: Make sure the pull-out hose is not caught on pipes or objects under the sink.
